BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry)

Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry or Auditory Brainstem Response Audiometry helps in identifying hearing ability of an individual who cannot perform the routine hearing assessment and performed under natural or induced sleep. This test is categorized under Electrophysiological Tests of Hearing and does not require active participation of an individual. This test helps in identifying hearing ability of population who cannot perform routine test of hearing due to age, physical or mental problems, in differentiating cochlear and retrocochlear pathologies, assessing hearing in cases with Microtia, Anotia, Atresia, Ear Tags,or Stenosis of ear canal etc. Assessment of Auditory Neuropathy etc.

There are Three Types of BERA/ABR

1

Threshold Estimation BERA/ABR

This tests hearing level of an individual.

2

High rate

For differentiating cochlear VS retrocochlear pathology

3

Bone Conduction BERA/ABR

This help in cases where normal BERA/ ABR via headphones cannot be done because of microtia, anotia, stenosis of ear canal.
